MORTAR BOARD

Washington State University

Dear WSU Student,

The Washington State
University chapter of Mortar Board is selecting new members for the
2008-2009 school year. Mortar Board is a prestigious national honor
society for college seniors. Since its establishment in 1918, nearly
a quarter of a million members have been initiated at 226 chartered
chapters across the nation. Membership recognizes superior
scholarship, leadership, and service to the university and the
community.

The Mortar Board

constitution delineates our purpose as follows: "to advance a
spirit of scholarship, to recognize and encourage leadership, to
provide service, and to establish the opportunity for a meaningful
exchange of ideas as individuals and as a group." In this
spirit, Mortar Board recognizes outstanding persons, honors them in a
tangible way, offers the opportunity for seniors to meet other campus
leaders, and provides service to the university and the community.

Activities andcontributions made by the WSU chapter include hosting the FreshmanScholars Dessert, serving as escorts for distinguished alumni,helping set up for university events such as the WSU Foundation Gala,working on Chamber of Commerce and other community events, andinteracting with various organizations in order to serve and promotehigher education. The scope of activities is determined each year bythe membership.

There are three
qualifications for membership in Mortar Board:

  1. The candidateshall be at least in his/her junior year or the equivalent in hours,depending on the candidate's accelerated or prolonged curriculum. Thecandidate must be a full-time student on the WSU Pullman campus andbe planning to graduate by December 2010.
  2. The candidate shall meet the minimum GPA of 3.0.
  3. The candidatemust be willing to meet the time requirements and pay a one-time initiation fee of $65. The group meets twice monthly. Mortar Board is a service as well as an honorary organization, and several group service projects will be required. Members are expected to devote at least 24 hours to projects through the whole school year.
