Welcome to Mortar Board WSU Charter

MORTAR BOARD
Washington State University

Dear WSU Student,

The Washington State University chapter of Mortar Board is selecting new members for the 2008-2009 school year. Mortar Board is a prestigious national honor society for college seniors. Since its establishment in 1918, nearly a quarter of a million members have been initiated at 226 chartered chapters across the nation. Membership recognizes superior scholarship, leadership, and service to the university and the community.

The Mortar Board constitution delineates our purpose as follows: "to advance a spirit of scholarship, to recognize and encourage leadership, to provide service, and to establish the opportunity for a meaningful exchange of ideas as individuals and as a group." In this spirit, Mortar Board recognizes outstanding persons, honors them in a tangible way, offers the opportunity for seniors to meet other campus leaders, and provides service to the university and the community.

Activities and contributions made by the WSU chapter include hosting the Freshman Scholars Dessert, serving as escorts for distinguished alumni, helping set up for university events such as the WSU Foundation Gala, working on Chamber of Commerce and other community events, and interacting with various organizations in order to serve and promote higher education. The scope of activities is determined each year by the membership.

There are three qualifications for membership in Mortar Board:
1. The candidate shall be at least in his/her junior year or the equivalent in hours, depending on the candidate's accelerated or prolonged curriculum. The candidate must be a full-time student on the WSU Pullman campus during the 2008-2009 school year, and be planning for graduation from WSU in December 2008 or May or December 2009.
2. The candidate shall meet the minimum GPA of 3.0.
